Business Categories Stripe Won't Connect: A Full List of Restricted Niches

We break down the business categories Stripe restricts or rejects, and explain what you can actually do about it.

Stripe is one of the most advanced payment platforms in the world, but it maintains strict rules about which types of business it works with. Some niches are classified as high-risk and require special preparation; others are simply unavailable for standard registration. Understanding these restrictions will help you avoid account suspension and build the right payment infrastructure.

Most restricted niches

1. Gambling and betting

Online casinos, bookmakers, poker rooms, lotteries and any gaming platforms involving real-money stakes — Stripe regulates this category extremely strictly. In certain jurisdictions, operation is possible with a valid licence, but standard registration is usually rejected.

2. Adult content

Even legally operating adult services are classified by Stripe as high-risk. Connecting without special preparation is practically impossible.

3. CBD, supplements and pharmaceuticals

Selling CBD products, weight-loss supplements, products with medical claims and prescription drugs all attract heightened scrutiny. The main risk factor is aggressive marketing with unsubstantiated health promises.

4. Forex, trading and financial projects

Binary options, unlicensed investment funds, crypto services with opaque models and managed accounts — without the correct legal structure, connecting to Stripe is nearly impossible.

5. Dropshipping with long delivery times

Stores without their own inventory, 20–40 day delivery windows and a high return rate create a blocking risk. Stripe monitors the dispute-to-turnover ratio, and if the chargeback rate exceeds acceptable limits, the account is restricted.

6. Reselling and digital goods resale

Reselling tickets, gaming accounts, digital keys and grey-market goods — the origin of such items is difficult to verify, so Stripe may terminate service without warning.

Why Stripe imposes restrictions

The platform works with thousands of partner banks and must comply with international financial regulations. The main reasons for blocks:

  • chargeback rate exceeding acceptable thresholds
  • MCC code not matching actual business activity
  • missing required licences
  • violation of platform terms of service

Stripe can re-review an account at any time — even after it has already been verified.

Can you operate in a difficult niche?

Yes, with the right preparation. For stable operation you need:

  1. Correct legal entity in a suitable jurisdiction
  2. Fully compliant website: terms of service, privacy policy, refund policy
  3. Warmed account with gradual volume growth
  4. Transaction monitoring and chargeback rate control
  5. Backup account with payment routing configured
